During the third century in Rome, Emperor Claudius II decided that single men would be better utilized as soldiers than husbands or fathers. So basically, all the single ladies–remained single ladies.
Saint Valentine defied Claudius and performed the marriages of young people, in secret. Of course, secrets don’t remain secrets all that long. Valentine was put to death for his actions.
It wasn’t until the end of the 5th century, that February 14th was declared as St. Valentine’s Day and associated with love. The most over-the-top gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. Mughal Emperor Shahjahan built it as a memorial to his wife. If you can’t give a Taj Mahal to your Valentine this year, check out RoverTown for sweet Valentine’s Day discounts!
